John Vignaux Smyth is the author of, among other things, The Habit of Lying: Sacrificial Studies in Literature, Philosophy, and Fashion Theory (Duke University Press, 2002) and A Question of Eros: Irony in Sterne, Kierkegaard, and Barthes (Florida University Press, 1986). With a B.A. and M.A. degree from Cambridge, and a Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania, he taught for 13 years at Bennington College in Vermont, and is currently a professor of English at Portland State University in Oregon, having been initially hired as Chair of English in 1998.
